BOLT STRIKES AGAIN

By David Martin, Press Association Sport, Brussels

Usain Bolt was again in vintage form at last night's IAAF Golden League meeting where he ran the world's fourth fastest ever 200 metres despite wet and cold conditions.

Bolt admitting to being lifted by an enthusiastic capacity crowd who roared him on to a meeting record of 19.57 seconds, a mark which only himself and the legendary American Michael Johnson have ever bettered.

His dominant display saw him destroy the entire field although he admitted it had been a massive effort and the execution had left him very tired.

"I didn't expect that I would run so fast and in the last 25 metres I backed off," Bolt said after thrashing Wallace Spearmon and Ramil Guliyev.

The Jamaican double sprint world record holder, who will have no major championships until 2011, added: "Next year will not be so intensive and I hope to be even stronger the following year and go even faster."

British athletes enjoyed a reasonable night of success with Christine Ohuruogu and Jemma Simpson claiming second places in their 400m and 800m races and Michael Bingham finishing third over 400m.

Ohuruogu paid tribute to Sanya Richards who took away her world title last month and was again in invincible form when winning their latest encounter in a world leading time for the year of 48.83secs.

"I'm quite satisfied about my race even if it was difficult to follow Sanya Richards today, she's in such good shape," said the Olympic champion who clocked 50.43.

"The weather conditions weren't so good and personally I'm not in my best form. But I enjoy taking so much experience in this kind of meeting and will come back better next year."

Simpson narrowly lost over 800m after a late sprint from American Anna Willard who beat her by 0.26 in a time of one minute 59.14 secs.

"I'm pleased with this race but it should have come two weeks earlier in Berlin," Simpson said after her surprise elimination in the world semi finals.

"I thought I could do it but my legs were tired."

Bingham was never in the class of winner former Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner, but he showed he is becoming more competitive as he chased home the American and

Trinidad's world bronze medallist Rennie Quow.

Bingham, who clocked 45.70, also just managed to hold off Ireland's David Gillick and fellow Briton Martyn Rooney who challenged him every inch of the way down the home straight.

William Sharman was fourth in the 110m hurdles, Simeon Williamson had to settle for eighth in the 100m while Kate Dennison finished sixth in the pole vault.

The England team of Andy Baddeley, Ricky Stevenson, Nick McCormick and Mark Draper smashed the 30-year-old UK 4x1500m relay record when finishing fifth with a time of 14: 54.57 in the rarely-contested event.

Richards, Yelena Isinbayeva and Kenenisa Bekele, keeping clean sheets in the sixth and final Golden League meeting of the summer, shared the US one million dollars jackpot.
