Lisa Dobriskey fully justified her decision to run only five days after claiming the 1500 metres silver medal at the World Championships with another great display at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Zurich.
Although she was unable to chase down world champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal and Anna Willard, Dobriskey finally crashed through the metric mile four-minute barrier.
Showing no tiredness from her Berlin exploits, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist raced to a time of three minutes 59.50 seconds to become the country's latest sub-four-minute performer, joining Kelly Holmes, Hayley Tullett and Zola Budd.
Dobriskey was thrilled with the time but was left kicking herself for getting her tactics slightly wrong, which ultimately left her with too much to do in the finishing straight.
"I had so much left but didn't get things right," she said. "I made my move with 300 metres left but didn't have the confidence to maintain the break.
"I kept thinking some of the girls had much faster finishes than me. Then I got boxed in with 200m left and that was a bit silly as I thought they would spread and let me through.
"Instead I was stuck in the traffic. Then I got free and gave it everything I could down the straight."
Jamal clocked 3min 59.15sec to triumph with Willard second in 3:59.38.
William Sharman deservedly made his Golden League debut after his outstanding fourth place in the 110m hurdles in Berlin, but he was given a rude awakening as he had to settle for sixth place.
Sharman, who clocked 13.37sec, left himself too much to do in the second half of the race as Dwight Thomas flew to a Jamaican record of 13.16sec.
"I could have finished higher but I got waylaid by the opposition at halfway but then recovered to finish strongly," said Sharman, who picked up prize money of US$3,000.
Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders finished fourth and sixth over 400m as world champion Sanya Richards continued her domination of the event.
The American, who finally collected a global title at the World Championships, has not lost a Golden League race over the distance for five years.
Richards lowered her world leading mark for the year to 48.93sec, with the British pair recording 50.41sec and 51.02sec respectively.
Kate Dennison placed seventh in the pole vault with a best clearance of 4.41m in a dramatic competition that saw Yelena Isinbayeva, a week after no-heighting and failing to defend her world title, raise her world record to 5.06m.
Tyrone Edgar was last in a 100m race that saw Usain Bolt pushed by his fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell.
The world record holder was a metre down at the halfway stage but powered through to win in 9.81sec, with Powell second in 9.88.
Bolt then returned to the track to anchor Jamaica to victory in the 4x100m relay in 37.70sec ahead of the USA (37.73), Trinidad and Tobago (38.20) and Great Britain (38.22sec).
Tom Lancashire competed gamely over 1500m, clocking 3min 34.74sec for fifth place as Kenya's Augustine Choge won in 3:33.38.
