World 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell has been voted the outstanding male athlete of 2006 at the Commonwealth Sports Awards.
The Jamaican sprinter pipped Scottish cyclist Chris Hoy at the 26th annual awards in London after claiming his first major title when he triumphed at the Games in Melbourne in March.
The 24-year-old twice equalled his world-record mark of 9.77seconds this season - at Gateshead and Zurich - as he ran a record 12 sub-10 second clockings.
Track cyclist Hoy, the Olympic and world champion, was second in the kilometre in Melbourne.
Welsh weightlifter Michaela Breeze, who claimed the gold medal Down Under, was pipped for first place in the outstanding female athlete category by rhythmic gymnast Alexandra Orlando of Canada, who won the title in each of the six events.
Other domestic athletes rewarded were Welsh swimmer David Roberts, who was third in the outstanding male elite athlete with disability, while English table tennis player Sue Gilroy was second in the female equivalent.
The Scottish swimming team, featuring the likes of double Commonwealth champions Caitlin McClatchey and David Carry, were voted third most outstanding team.
While Welshman Dave Haller, who currently coaches Olympic and world bronze freestyle medallist David Davies and formerly guided Olympic champions David Wilkie and Duncan Goodhew, was third in the lifetime achievement category.
