David Weir's bid for a record seventh title at the Virgin Money London Marathon ended in disappointment as Switzerland's Marcel Hug edged him out in a sprint finish.

The four-time London 2012 gold medallist did not quite have the strength to overhaul his rival in the closing metres as he finished one second adrift in second place.

But the 34-year-old Briton had struggled with a chest infection in the build-up and this performance suggested he was getting back to his best after enjoying a lighter season last year after his Paralympic exploits.

Weir came home in one hour 32 minutes and 42 seconds.
