Hirscher wins at Val d'Isere

Austria's Marcel Hirscher won the World Cup giant slalom race at Val d'Isere on Sunday.

Hirscher finished his two runs in a combined time of one minute 54.10 seconds to edge out German Stefan Luitz by 1.16 seconds.

American Ted Ligety was third.

Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, the leader in the overall standings, had to settle for sixth place as he saw his lead cut to 38 points by Ligety.

Hirscher's win kept him in third overall, but meant he closed the gap to the summit to 60 points.
