After Stephen Jenness opened the scoring for the Black Sticks, field goals either side of half-time from Darren Cheesman and Barry Middleton put England 2-1 ahead.
But Nick Wilson levelled nine minutes from the end, then scored a penalty corner seven minutes into the extra period to give his side a 3-2 win.
England coach Jason Lee said: "I thought we did well to stay in the game today.
