Just two days after the final race of the 2012 season, the teams were back on track at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo to begin preparations for the 2013 campaign.

That meant nine-time world champion Rossi was able to climb back aboard a Yamaha after the conclusion of his unsuccessful two-year spell with Ducati.

But the Italian could only end the day sixth-fastest after missing out on the only dry running of the day during the morning, completing 28 laps in total.

That meant Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista led the way ahead of Stefan Bradl and Andrea Dovizioso, the latter having his first run in Ducati colours as Rossi's replacement.

Hiroshi Aoyama was fourth on the quickest of the CRT machines, with Nicky Hayden fifth on the other Ducati.

New world champion Jorge Lorenzo and title rival Dani Pedrosa elected not to do any running on their Yamaha and Honda respectively.

Rookies Bradley Smith and Moto 2 champion Marc Marquez, who replaces the retired Casey Stoner at Repsol Honda, also sat out the day and will have to wait to get their first run on MotoGP machinery.
