The German was unable to convert pole position into victory in the US Grand Prix but finishing second to Lewis Hamilton meant his lead over Fernando Alonso extended to 13 points.
That means that a top four finish in the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix will be enough for him to clinch a third straight title and land a double for Red Bull after they secured the Constructors' Championship on Sunday.
Alonso needs to win and hope that Vettel is outside the top four, finish second with Vettel outside the top seven or finish third and hope Vettel is ninth or worse if he's to win the title for a third time.
The Spaniard is 4/1 to snatch the title from Vettel and 7/2 third favourite in the betting for the Brazilian Grand Prix, behind 9/4 favourite Vettel and 11/4 chance Hamilton.
"Vettel takes a crucial but not yet decisive lead to Brazil, although he remains long odds-on to retain his crown as it looks as if Alonso will have to beat the championship leader and an in-form Hamilton at Interlagos if he is to defy the odds," said Coral's David Stevens.
Sky Bet quote 22/1 that Vettel is the first driver to retire from the race, a circumstance which would swing the door wide open for Alonso, who can be backed at the same price.
