Paul Sturrock's Southend are backed to win.

2pts Southend to beat Torquay at 9/4 (Boylesports).

Torquay host Southend on Saturday with both sides on the fringes of the play-off race.

The two teams enter this match on the back of differing runs of form with Torquay failing to win in three games and Southend unbeaten in four matches.

The Shrimpers have improved with the loan additions of Marc Laird and Tamika Mkandawire adding extra quality to the ranks.

Last weekend's 0-0 draw against second-placed Port Vale made it five clean sheets in eight games and the performance warranted the three points.

Forward Gavin Tomlin offered his views after the match with positives and negatives for the men from Roots Hall to consider.

"We seem to be able to play well against the top teams like Port Vale, Rotherham, Cheltenham and Gillingham but don't do the same against the sides lower down which has to change," he told The Echo.

"Our next game is against Torquay who are up there in and around the play-offs so hopefully that will suit us.

"But long term we need to be able to play like this consistently if we want to also be involved in going for promotion which I certainly think we're capable of doing with the players we have in our squad now."

Torquay are back at Plainmoor after the defeat against non-league Harrogate Town in the first round of the FA Cup a couple of weeks ago.

The Gulls drew 0-0 against inconsistent Oxford last weekend but it wasn't an impressive performance and they had poor finishing from the U's to thank for the point.

Martin Ling's men will get back on track but it won't be this weekend.

That means the 9/4 for Southend to win should be taken.
