The 162-kilometre first stage from Al Musannah to Sultan Qaboos University was won by Germany's Marcel Kittel (Team Argos-Shimano) in a sprint finish.

Team Sky say Wiggins was delayed by a late crash and should therefore be awarded the same time as those he was riding alongside due to a rule governing crashes in the closing 3km of the stage, but official results show him one minute 31 seconds behind.

Wiggins and Chris Froome are this week riding in the same team for the first time since the 2012 Tour de France, when the pair finished first and second, respectively.

Froome, set to lead Team Sky in the 2013 Tour this summer, ended the day 53rd, 10 seconds behind Kittel.

Team Sky were confident Wiggins would not lose time as a result of the crash, but official results were still to reflect this.

"There was a crash with 2km to go," sports director Nicolas Portal said on teamsky.com.

"Bradley was not caught up in it but he was behind it and there was a little split in the peloton as the riders slowed down. So with the 3km rule he should be fine."
