The 27-year-old was a 3-2 winner, eventually coming through having trailed 2-1 at one stage.

Earlier in the day, second seed and former winner Martin Adams was knocked out 3-2 by Dutch teenage debutant Jimmy Hendricks, while Steve Douglas beat Gary Stone less than a month after suffering a heart attack.

Hendriks, 18, is appearing for the first time in the event at Frimley Green and ensured it was a debut to remember as he held his nerve to secure a memorable 3-2 victory.

The Dutch youngster went 1-0 and 2-1 ahead only to be twice pegged back by his experienced opponent, but Adams' frailty on the doubles ultimately cost him in the decider as Hendriks recorded the biggest win of his fledgling career.

Defeat for Adams means that there will be a new name on the trophy this year with all previous champions, including last year's winner Christian Kist, having been knocked out.

Scott Mitchell also saw off Mark Barilli 3-2, Jan Dekker shaded an all-Dutch clash with Jeffrey de Graaf 3-2 and Wesley Harms saw off Rune David.
