Bassong completes Norwich move

Norwich have completed the signing of defender Sebastien Bassong from Tottenham on a three-year deal.

Sebastien Bassong: Joins Norwich

The Canaries were beaten 5-0 on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League campaign and the French-born Cameroon international will add some much-needed cover for new boss Chris Hughton, who worked with the 26-year-old at Newcastle.

Bassong revealed the opportunity of working with Hughton again "made a big difference" in his decision.

Bassong first worked with new Norwich manager Hughton when he was at Newcastle, signed from Metz for £500,000 in the summer of 2008.

Despite an £8million move to Tottenham after the Magpies were relegated and going on to play in the Champions League, the centre-back found his chances of first-team football limited at White Hart Lane last season, eventually being farmed out on loan to Wolves.

There were other options for Bassong - which are understood to have also included a stay in London with QPR - but the prospect of joining Hughton at the start of his Carrow Road project proved key.

"Chris Hughton made a big difference for me in my choice. He was the first man to give me a training session in England when I came from France," Bassong told Canaries Player.

"He knows me really well and so I am very happy to work for him again.

"This is a really good thing for me to join this club and I am looking forward to playing for the team.

"Last season Norwich impressed me a lot when I came to play here in the league [with Wolves]. They did well and have kept all of their players.

"This is a strong team with good character and there is also quality here.

"Chris Hughton came here also, and that meant I wanted to be part of the challenge."

Bassong could go straight into the side for Saturday's visit of QPR, when both clubs will look to bounce back from their disappointing 5-0 defeats on the opening day.

The centre-half feels he can help shore up the Norwich backline, which was brutally exposed by Fulham at Craven Cottage.

"I have had some great years at Newcastle and Tottenham, then also some times I was not playing enough," he said.

"It brought me experience, I have grown up now and know how to handle it

"Now, though, I have to use that to help Norwich the best I can.

"There is a great team spirit, they show great character and quality as well.

"Norwich are good footballers with a good spirit, and so have everything to stay in the Premier League."

Last week, the Canaries signed former Manchester City left-back Javier Garrido on loan from Lazio and have been scouting Blackburn goalkeeper Mark Bunn, who is reported to have handed in a transfer request.

Hughton is confident Bassong is just what Norwich need as they look to build on life after Paul Lambert, who left to take charge at Aston Villa in the summer.

"Sebastien is a player that I have known well since my time at Newcastle and I am delighted to have brought in someone with the Premier League experience he has got," Hughton said on the club's official website,

"He will give us power and pace at the back, and again add to the competition in the squad."
