The two marathon races will start in the village of Marathon.
The races will follow the same route taken by
Greek messenger Phidippides, who ran 26 miles 385 yards to Athens to announce
the Greek victory against the Persians, only to drop dead upon delivering the
news.
The 2004 race will finish at the Panathinaiko Stadium - the famous marble
arena where the Games were revived in 1896 and where Spyridon Louis became the
first marathon gold medal winner of the modern era.
