The ancient marble Panathinaiko Stadium was the venue for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
In ancient years the site hosted the Panathenean Games, festival events that were
held to honour the Greek goddess Athena (the Goddess of wisdom, skills, and
warfare in ancient Greece and protector of the City of Athens).
The overall project of restoration resulted in a 34,500 capacity for the two
marathon finishes.
Will Paula Radcliffe triumph 108 years after Spyridon Louis ran into the stadium to become
the first marathon gold medal winner of the modern era?
The stadium, which played host to Greece's Euro 2004 celebrations recently, also hosts the archery.
