The Olympic Stadium, the centrepiece of the Athens Games, hosts the track and
field events plus the opening and closing ceremonies.
A steel-and-glass roof designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava is to
be the "architectural signature" of the Games but its erection over the
stadium was delayed - a fact well documented in the media.
The upgrading of the stadium has been one of the more public
concerns, with dove-white seats only ordered from an Australian firm in April.
It is part of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex area in which several of the leading venues are situated.
