Michael Phelps took his sixth gold of the Games when the USA won the men's 4x100m medley relay.
Phelps was not part of the American quartet which broke the world record in the final, but will get a medal for competing in the heats.
The sixth gold brings his medal tally for the Games to eight - he also has two bronze - a figure which equals Russian gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin's total for medals in one Olympics.
The US team of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker, Jason Lezak clocked new record figures of 3.30.68, to finish ahead of Germany and Japan.
Great Britain's team of Gregor
Tait, James Gibson, Hickman and Matt Kidd trailed in last in 3:37.77.
