Australia won the women's 4x100m medley relay in a new world record time.
The team of Giaan Rooney, Leisel Jones, Petria Thomas and Jodie Henry edged out arch rivals the USA to take gold in 3.57.32. Germany took bronze.
Australia's performance overshadowed American Jenny Thompson's achievement of becoming the most decorated Olympic swimmer ever.
Her silver took her Olympic tally to 12 - more than any other swimmer in history.
Britain finished back in fifth place - in a new national record time - but were then disqualified.
The British quartet of Katy Sexton, Kirsty Balfour, Georgina Lee and Kathryn Evans were kicked out for a 'lane infraction' in the third leg, but were never in
the hunt for the medals.
