There was further disappointment for Britain in the women's 800m freestyle when
Rebecca Cooke could only finish sixth in the final.
Cooke had dominated her heat on Thursday, leading from start to finish to
qualify second quickest.
But the 21-year-old from Crawley was never in the hunt for a medal as Japan's
Ai Shibata overhauled long-time leader Laure Manaudou of France in the closing
stages to win gold in a time of 8:24.54.
Cooke was almost five seconds adrift in a time of 8:29.37.
Cooke, who was in tears after the race, said: "It's just really hard when you
know how much work you've put in.
"I literally live like a hermit just to make sure I give my best.
"To not compete how I expected and not get what I feel I deserved at the
Olympics is just really, really upsetting.
"It's going to be a lot tougher to get over this because it's an Olympic
Games and they only come round every four years. I think it's going to take me a
while but I'm sure I'll bounce back.
"I wasn't overly nervous, it's just such a big occasion and you just want to
swim your best."
