The murder of an Italian journalist in Iraq almost caused a major diplomatic
incident at the Olympics.
The football teams of the respective
nations met in the bronze medal match on Friday, but it emerged after the game that the match almost did not go ahead.
Italy coach Claudio Gentile revealed: "We were very nervous and not up to
playing in the morning, but Mr Franco Carraro (president of the Italian FA) came
and explained that the game has to be played.
"However, it was not easy for us to prepare mentally for the game.
"My players were not in the best psychological condition based on what
happened in Iraq."
