In an effort to reinvigorate the Olympics after the lack-lustre Games of 1900 and 1904, Greece organised the "interim Olympics" despite opposition from the International Olympics Committee.

Athens proved a powerful drawing card even in the face of IOC opposition, as 884 athletes from 18 countries participated, 338 athletes more than in St Louis.

However, the Games are not officially recognised by the IOC.
