WILLIAMS SISTERS TAKE GOLD
Wimbledon champion Venus Williams claimed her second gold of the Sydney
Olympics when she teamed up with younger sister Serena to sweep aside their
Dutch opponents in the final of the women's doubles.
The American sisters overpowered Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans 6-1 6-1 to
finish the tournament without having dropped a single set.
Venus, who had to play 11 matches in 10 days to achieve her golden double,
beat Russia's Elena Dementieva to win the singles title.
The only other woman to have won both doubles and singles golds at the
Olympics was Helen Wills Woody, who managed the feat in Paris in 1924.
"Just to be part of history is really important," said Venus, who is also
the reigning US Open champion.
She revealed that she rated her doubles win just as highly as her singles
triumph, and added: "To have a victory with my sister - one of my best friends
- it's just great."
