WILLIAMS STORMS INTO LAST EIGHT
By PA Sport Staff
Venus Williams reached the last eight of the women's tennis tournament with a
6-2 6-2 win over Germany's Jana Kandarr.
The second seed, the overwhelming
favourite for the gold medal after the withdrawal of her US teammate Lindsay
Davenport, now plays Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain.
In the men's event, fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov and 11th seed Mark Philippoussis both progressed to round three with straight sets wins.
Kafelnikov, the 1999 Australian Open champion, defeated Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 7-6 6-4, whilst Denmark's Kristian Pless was the 6-4 6-4 victim of the 'Scud'.
In the women's doubles, Holland put the finishing touches on an abysmal Olympics for British
tennis as Dutch duo Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans swept past Julie Pullin
and Lorna Woodroffe 6-2 6-1 in just 58 minutes.
Neither the men, nor women of
Britain managed to win a set in the four matches played this week.
