Pat Rafter and Mark Philippoussis put hostilities on hold on Tuesday as the
'Friendly Games' brought apparent sweetness and light to the Australian tennis
camp for the first time in months.
Both comfortably won their first round matches in the men's singles and then
announced that the rift, caused by Philippoussis' decision not to play for his
country in Davis Cup, was not being allowed to spoil the Olympic experience.
"Everything is fine," said Philippoussis after beating Thomas Johansson of
Sweden 7-6 6-4.
"We are eating together, watching TV together, watching our Australian
athletes represent their country and it's very relaxing.
"We are talking and stuff and congratulating each other on our matches, so
it's good."
The reason for their rift, however, remains unresolved, though Rafter, who
beat America's Vince Spadea 6-4 6-3, is confident total peace is close.
"There's no ill-feeling," said Rafter. "We are very comfortable with each
other. I really hope we sit down and talk about the differences because Mark is
a good kid. I was really looking forward to settling it."
Meanwhile, Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe turned in a marathon performance to beat
Spain's Albert Costa, the 15th seed, 6-3 3-6 11-9.
Other seeds to fall included ninth-ranked Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, who was
beaten 6-4 6-3 by Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale.
The number nine seed in the women's tournament also tumbled, Amelie Mauresmo
of France losing 6-3 3-6 6-2 to Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga.
