DUTCH MASTER TAKES GOLD
Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband completed a memorable double when he claimed gold in an exciting 100m freestyle final.
The Dutchman - who beat Australian sensation Ian Thorpe in the 200m freestyle - edged out Russia's Alexander Popov in a slightly disappointing time of 48.30.
Bronze was claimed by outspoken American Gary Hall Jr, but there was no medal for home favourite Michael Klim, who finished fourth.
After the race the Dutchman could not hide his delight at taking gold.
"It's unbelievable - I'm still dreaming," said van den Hoogenband.
"I was feeling a bit tired in the race but I wanted gold so badly and I'm so happy."
