BIG DAN BEATS DALEY
By PA Sport Staff
Londoner Colin Daley was forced out of the medal reckoning by one of the
favourites of the Taekwondo tournament.
Daley, beaten 8-4 by Marcus Thoren in his opening bout, was re-routed back
into contention for the bronze via the repechage system when the Swede reached
the final of the +80kg competition.
But the Frenchman Pascal Gentil was his master in the first fight-off for
third place.
The Briton, in the last year of his electronic and engineering studies at
Loughborough University, soon found himself 2-0 behind when Gentil thundered
home two jumping roundhouse kicks to the mid-section.
He was warned for an illegal attacking move while looking to close the early
deficit, and went into the second round with a lot to do to loosen the
Frenchman's grip.
Daley hit back early in the third with a roundhouse kick to move back into
contention, but lost the point for inactivity and Gentil quickly registered
another score, forcing Daley to take as standing count, before moving forward in
repechage by 3-0 at the expense of the British hope.
Gentil's quest for the gold foundered in the semi-final, which Korea's
Kyong-hun Kim won 6-2, prompting a protest from the French coach Patrick
Stanczak over the first round scoring, but officials overruled the complaint.
