LATE DOUBLE KEEPS BRITISH DREAMS ALIVE
By Cathy Harris, PA Sport, Sydney
A goal by Mandy Nicholson four minutes from time helped keep Great Britain's
hopes of qualifying for the second 'Super Six' stage of the tournament alive.
She calmly slotted home the equaliser after the side fought back from 2-0 down
to earn a 2-2 draw against Korea at the State Sports Centre in Sydney on Tuesday.
After Mel Clewlow had hammered in the side's only penalty corner of the
contest in the 57th minute, both teams threw everything in to the attack to set
up a frenzied finale.
Some desperate defending at the back by goalkeeper Hilary Rose and Kath
Johnson helped keep the lively Korean forwards at bay, while Jane Sixsmith led
GB's strikers at the other end as they searched to level the scores.
Watched by head coach Jon Royce, who sat in the stands after being suspended
for one match, Great Britain were guilty of a lacklustre first-half display,
giving the ball away on numerous occasions and often caught in possession.
Although they created several chances, they failed to find the target or win a
penalty corner before the break.
Korea went ahead after 14 minutes when Kim Seon-Eun's penalty corner strike
was deflected past Rose, and they doubled their lead in the 48th minute when Kim
Eun-Jin prodded the ball home after GB had failed to clear the ball.
Taking of advantage when their opponents were reduced to 10 players after Yoo
Hee-Joo was sent to the sin bin, Clewlow's fierce shot sparked a revival and
Nicholson made the most of her opportunity when the ball rolled loose and she
had time to pick her spot.
But it took a tremendous effort by the British defence to deny the Koreans who
hit back to force four penalty corners in the last few minutes.
