BRITS THROW AWAY LEAD TO DRAW
By PA Sport Staff
Great Britain threw away a two-goal lead to allow Malaysia to snatch a draw in
the men's hockey at Sydney's State Sports Centre on Wednesday.
After going 2-0 up at half time, Britain relinquished their control of the
game and squandered several excellent chances to win a match which saw full-back
Tom Bertram received a cut above his eye.
Craig Parnham opened his account in the tournament in the 18th minute when he
flicked the ball powerfully into the net when the ball was switched to him from
Britain's third penalty corner.
Nine minutes later, Mark Pearn kept up his record of scoring in every match
when he cracked in the second goal from close range following an excellent run
and cross from Michael Johnson.
But after Jimmy Wallis and Guy Fordham both wasted great opportunities at the
start of the second half, Malaysia gradually fought their way back into the
contest.
Zaini Nor Saiful reduced the deficit when he unleashed a powerful penalty
corner drive in the 59th minute.
And as the capacity crowd roared on Malaysia, Raj Keevan equalised from their
third penalty corner of the half when he swept the ball in over Simon Mason's
outstretched arm four minutes from time.
