HOCKEY COACH HIT BY BAN
By PA Sport Staff
The head coach of Great Britain's women's hockey team, Jon Royce, has been
suspended from Wednesday's match against Korea following alleged crude and
inappropriate comments to a female doping control escort after the 1-0 defeat by
Argentina.
Royce said that the team would not be appealing against the one-match
suspension which was imposed in the wake of Monday's defeat.
He said: "There is no judicial process here and therefore you are accused of
something and held to be guilty without being able to defend yourself.
"I will be sitting in the stand watching the game but I will not be able to
talk to the team at half-time."
The 39-year-old former coach of National League side Teddington strongly
criticised the format of the women's competition following the defeat against
Argentina, describing it as "nonsensical" and adding that "it must have been
organised by lunatics".
He also criticised the South African umpire in Great Britain's opening defeat
at the Olympic tournament by Australia.
