STARK MAKING MARK ON JAYBEE
Britain on Friday confirmed their line-up for the team
Three-Day Event starting on Saturday, with Scot Ian Stark opting to open his fifth
and final Olympics bid on Jaybee as expected.
Stark, the only member of the squad also likely to compete in the individual
event, leads a strong line-up expected to challenge defending champions
Australia and New Zealand for the gold medal.
Jeanette Brakewell, on Over to You, Leslie Law, on Shear H2O, and Pippa
Funnell with Supreme Rock, make up the quartet, with two riders competing on
each of the two dressage days over the weekend, with the cross-country and
jumping sections to follow.
The individual Three Day Event line-up, which begins next Wednesday, will not
be finalised until after the trot-up for that competition on Tuesday, although
Stark, with his second mount, Arakai, is expected to join Karen Dixon on Too
Smart and Mary King with Star Appeal.
"The team is confident and feels well prepared with all the horses fully fit
and ready to run," said team manager Matt Straker following a vet's inspection
and trot-up this morning
Chef d'Equipe Yogi Breisner also expressed his confidence that after a
successful preparation period, Britain were in a strong position to end the
equestrian medal drought of the past two Olympic Games.
"Having walked the cross-country course - which is long, bold and challenging
- and knowing my squad, I have enormous confidence in our competitiveness," he
added.
