WOMEN TO SHINE, SAYS REGIS

On a day of mixed fortunes for our athletes John Regis described the failure of the men's 4x100 team to qualify for Saturday's final as “a disaster”.
“The 4x100 was a comedy of errors,” said the former Olympic sprinter.
“From the first change right through to the end of the race everything that could go wrong went wrong.
“Dwain Chambers said he was gutted but things like this sometimes happen in athletics and I'm sure that the guys will treat this episode as a learning curve.”
Turning to the 4x400, Regis thought that this year it would be our women, and not the men, who would grab medal glory.
“The men's team has done well to make it to the final, but the women have a great chance of a medal,” he said.
“Everything will hinge on the order the British girls run the race – but if they get it right they have every chance of standing tall and taking gold.”
Paula Radcliffe is highly fancied to get on the podium in Saturday's 10,000m – and Regis agrees Radcliffe will take a medal for Britain.
“I think Paula will definitely medal,” said Regis.
“She looked very comfortable in the heats and seemed as though she had more to give.
“The only question is not whether she will get a medal, but what colour it will be,” he added.
Regis also reflects on Marion Jones' defeat in the long jump – a result he predicted – and looks back at Hicham El Guerroujs' defeat in a “great” 1500m duel with Kenya's Noah Ngeny.
