HONOURABLE DEFEAT FOR SHAW
Britain's Lorraine Shaw finished ninth in the women's hammer throw final.
The Commonwealth silver medallist, who had surpassed expectations in
making the women's hammer throw final, narrowly failed to go a step further by
qualifying for the last eight who receive three extra throws.
The British record holder finished ninth with a best throw on the night of
64.27 metres, almost three metres short of her best.
Victory went to 17-year-old junior Kamila Skolimowska, winner of Poland's
third gold medal at the Games with a national record throw of 71.16 metres -
also a new Olympic record.
Russia's Olga Kuzenkova took the silver medal throwing 69.77m with Germany's
Kirsten Muenchow 69.28m claiming the bronze.
