Having completed a four-game suspension imposed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam 'Pacman' Jones is now waiting to hear if he has been reinstated.
However, the NFL had no comment on the matter on Monday, leaving Jones and the Cowboys in limbo.
Dallas coach Wade Phillips said he would have no problem welcoming Jones back to the team despite his troubled past.
"I think he can add something," Phillips said.
"The guy worked hard in practice, was at all the meetings, never late for anything, and he listened. He tried to do what you wanted."
Jones was suspended on October 14 following his latest off-the-field incident in which he was involved in an altercation with his bodyguard at a hotel.
In issuing the suspension, Goodell called Jones' behaviour "the continuation of a disturbing pattern of behaviour and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL".
Since alcohol was involved, Jones' actions violated terms of his previous reinstatement.
Goodell suspended Jones for a minimum of four games and said he would determine the final length of Jones' suspension following the Cowboys' week 11 game against the Washington Redskins.
The four-game suspension officially concluded following the Cowboys' 14-10 win over the Redskins on Sunday night.
Jones was also required to complete alcohol counselling.
A history of legal problems - including six arrests - has plagued Jones since entering the league as a first-round draft choice in 2005.
The most serious incident took place at a Las Vegas strip club in February 2007 during the NBA's All-Star Weekend, when a disturbance led to the shooting of a bouncer who became paralysed from his wounds.
Jones accepted a plea deal, pleading no contest to a single
charge of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct, a misdemeanour.
He was given a suspended one-year prison sentence and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.
Jones was suspended for the entire 2007 season for multiple violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy.
He was reinstated by the league on August 26 - four months after the Cowboys acquired him in a trade with the Tennessee Titans.
