A day after trading Adam Archuleta, the Washington Redskins signed veteran safety Omar Stoutmire to a one-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Redskins plan to start Sean Taylor at free safety and Vernon Fox at strong safety in 2007.
A 10-year veteran, Stoutmire can back up both positions.
He filled that role for the Redskins in 2005 before signing with the New Orleans Saints last season.
Stoutmire started nine of 13 games with the Saints and recorded 56 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed.
On Tuesday, the Redskins traded Adam Archuleta to the Chicago Bears for a conditional sixth-round pick.
Archuleta started seven games and recorded 50 tackles - 39 solo - and one sack in his only season with Washington.
Stoutmire, 32, has played in 133 NFL games with Dallas (1997-98), the New York Jets (1999), the New York Giants (2000-04), Washington (2005) and New Orleans.
