The New England Patriots were the only team to add a player ahead of the NFL's trade deadline as they plugged their injury-hit defense with the signing of Isaac Sopoaga from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Patriots, who have struggled in the absence of linemen Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly and linebacker Jerod Mayo, sent a fifth-round pick in next year's draft to Philadelphia in exchange for Sopoaga and a sixth-round pick.

Sopoaga was surplus to requirements at the Eagles due to the form of Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton.

Several other rumoured trades around the league failed to materialise, with the Minnesota Vikings' Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen staying put despite being linked with the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.

Safety Jairus Byrd is staying put with the Buffalo Bills, who had reportedly considered allowing him to leave if they could attract a suitable younger player as a replacement.

No deal was forthcoming for New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks or the Tennessee Titans' out-of-favour wideout Kenny Britt, who had said he was open to a move.
