The 29-year-old was a free agent after leaving the Rams after nine years with the organisation having been drafted by the club in 2004.

Jackson had 1,042 yards rushing and four touchdowns with the Rams last season - his eighth straight season with more than 1,000 yards rushing.

Atlanta have brought in Jackson to replace Michael Turner and a statement on their twitter feed read: "The Falcons announced that they have agreed to terms with RB Steven Jackson."

Jackson has 10,135 yards rushing, the most of any active player, and he thanked the Rams for being part of the club for such a long period of time.

"To the entire St Louis Rams organisation, thank you for believing in me and allowing me to be an integral part of this team for so many years," he wrote on twitter.

St Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke has issued the following statement in the wake of Jackson's exit.

"For nearly a decade, Steven Jackson served as an inspiration for his St Louis Rams teammates and our fans as he became our franchise's all-time leading rusher," said Kroenke.

"Off the field, his generosity and unselfishness improved the lives of many families in the St. Louis community. We will always be thankful for his contributions to our team and region and wish him success moving forward."
