The former first overall draft pick and four-time Pro Bowler picked up the injury in the Dolphins' defeat to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

It is possible that Long has played his last game for Miami as his rookie contract expires at the end of the season and it would likely take a lucrative new deal to tie him down.

Long has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his previous four seasons in the NFL and is generally regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in the league.

But he has struggled during the 2012 campaign and will now end his season on injured reserve for the second straight year.

Miami Dolphins have signed offensive tackle Patrick Brown to cover the loss of Long from the active roster.
