Bob Estes won a birdie duel with Tom Lehman and Rory Sabbatini to win the
Invensys Classic in Las Vegas - his second PGA Tour title since June.
Estes carded a bogey-free nine-under-par 63 at the TPC at Summerlin, which
yielded 14 scores of 66 or better in the final round, including Davis Love III's
course-record 61.
Lehman and Sabbatini shot 66 and 64 respectively, but missed birdie putts in
the final group at the 18th hole and finished a stroke behind Estes, whose
30-under-par total of 329 matched the tournament record.
Estes grabbed the lead for good at the par-five 16th hole and ended up with
his second win of the season and third of his 14-year career when he parred the
final two holes.
"Sixty-three was the score I had in mind," said Estes, whose streak of 17
consecutive rounds in the 60s is the best on Tour.
Estes started five shots back but had broken 70 in each of his previous 16
rounds.
He got a break when Scott McCarron, who started the final round with a
three-shot lead, stumbled and finished with a 71 to tie Love for fourth at
27-under 332.
The 16th hole decided the tournament, playing in the final threesome with
Sabbatini and McCarron, Lehman put his second shot at the par-five in the
water.
He scrambled for par but squandered his chance of tying Estes for the lead.
"It was like the club slipped in my hand," said Lehman. "It was pretty
bizarre."
Cameron Beckman finished a career-best sixth on 26-under at 333, one shot
better than John Daly, Scott Verplank, Australian Craig Parry and Chris Riley.
