LOVE ENDS VICTORY DROUGHT Click here for more golf news

Davis Love III ended a three-year victory drought on the PGA Tour when he won the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro by two strokes on Sunday.

Winless in his previous 76 PGA Tour events, Love came from behind at the turn, storming home with four birdies on the back nine to finish two shots ahead of Jason Bohn.

Love shot a six-under-par 66 in benign conditions to finish at 16-under 272 on the Forest Oaks course he redesigned before the 2003 event for his first win since the 2003 International.

"It's a big relief," Love said.

"I came here with a brand new set of irons and a brand new ball. I just needed to start with a clean slate (after five weeks off)."

Bohn shot a bogey-free 66 to finish at 274, with Eric Axley (67) and Steve Flesch (68) another shot back.

Axley, who won the Texas Open three weeks ago, briefly had a three-shot lead when he birdied the 13th but dropped two shots down the stretch as his putter let him down under pressure.

Love's victory was worth US$900,000 (£481,254), lifting him to 15th on the money list and securing him a spot in the season-ending Tour Championship.

It was Love's 19th career victory and served as some consolation for missing the United States Ryder Cup team after six successive appearances.

"I learned a big lesson this year because I wanted the Ryder Cup so bad that I let it get in the way of everything else I was doing," he said.

"It took over my golf life, became bigger than it really was. I was playing for the record, to make seven so I can make eight.

"I came in excited and ready to play rather than fearful that I was not going to play well and make the Ryder Cup team.

"People want me to win, they expect me to win and especially at a place like this, that's been my problem - expectations, whether they're mine or other people's."

Love began Sunday tied for the lead with Chris Couch and had a confidence-boosting start with birdies at the first two holes.

A bogey at the par-four seventh, where a poor approach shot plugged in a greenside bunker, could have been a killer blow but Love dug deep to birdie the tough par-three eighth, where he hit a towering three-iron to eight feet.

"That was probably the biggest two holes of my year, because I could have gotten frustrated and disappointed and said, 'Here we go again,"' he said.

"(But) I came right back."

Love still made the turn two shots behind Axley, seemingly on his way to another near miss.

A birdie at the par-four 10th was a step in the right direction and Love took control of the tournament at the par-five 13th, where he made a four-foot birdie.

He picked up another shot with a nine-footer at the demanding par-four 14th and reached the back fringe of the par-five 15th with two mighty blows for a tap-in birdie.

Apart from a wayward drive at the 16th, he did not miss a shot the rest of the way.

"I've been up and down this year," he said. "It's nice to be back."
