Steve Stricker birdied the final hole to win the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday.
With fellow Americans Jason Dufner and Scott Verplank in the clubhouse on 16 under par, Stricker stood on the par-five 18th tee knowing a birdie would be good enough to claim the title.
And he held his nerve to clinch victory at TPC Boston.
Stricker had also birdied the 17th and his late heroics were richly rewarded - as well as the trophy he picked up a cheque for US$1.35million.
Dufner had charged into the title picture with a final round of 65, six under, while Verplank's 67 had looked set to earn him at least a play-off until the late drama.
Padraig Harrington finished two shots behind Stricker, who was winning for the third time on this season's PGA Tour.
The Irishman had started well enough with four birdies in the first seven holes, but the key moment of his round came at the 12th where he double-bogeyed to slip back. He finished in a tie for fourth.
Tiger Woods hit a best-of-the-day 63, a round that included eight birdies and an eagle at the sixth, to move up to joint 11th but the damage had already been done by his round of 72 on Sunday.
