The PGA Tour produced another Sunday play-off as Bo Van Pelt defeated John Mallinger in sudden death to win the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Hours after Stewart Cink defeated veteran Tom Watson over four extra holes at Turnberry, Mallinger and Van Pelt were sent beyond regulation after finishing 72 holes tied on 13 under at the par-70 Brown Deer Park course.
Van Pelt edged ahead of his rival at the second play-off hole after both men birdied the par-five 18th first time around. Having each executed perfect drives, Mallinger attempted to follow Van Pelt onto the green but his approach found a bunker short and to the right.
His rescue attempt came up short and outside of Van Pelt's putt and Mallinger's two-putt left Van Pelt with two putts to win.
It was still not cut and dried, though, as Van Pelt left his first putt short, but he buried the second and in his 229th start, the American landed his first PGA Tour victory.
"I guess there comes a point when you have to draw a line in the sand and say, 'enough's enough'," an emotional Van Pelt said. "I've had enough good chances and haven't got it done and now it feels good.
"The way I've played these play-off holes made it worth the wait."
Van Pelt had shot a final-round, six-under 64 and Mallinger a 65, the latter blowing a chance to win outright with a bogey at the 17th and a missed eagle opportunity at the 18th.
Wisconsin native Jerry Kelly gave up his spot in the Open Championship to play in his home state in a bid to raise the profile of a tournament that will lose its current sponsor after this week and he earned third place for his sacrifice following a closing 64 that gave him a 12-under finish.
Dicky Pride, Jeff Quinney and Jeff Klauk tied for fourth at 11 under while Tim Petrovic and Spencer Levin posted 63s to jump into an eight-way tie for seventh place at 10 under.
Skip Kendall had leapt into contention with five birdies in his first six holes to get to nine under par but a double bogey five at the 11th undid his charge to victory and a birdie at the last was too late for the American, leaving him at eight under par.
Overnight leader Frank Lickliter, seeking his first win since 2003, never got his final round going having started the day at 11 under par with a one-stroke lead over Australia's Greg Chalmers.
Both Lickliter and Chalmers saw their challenges fizzle out with over-par rounds of 73 and 71, the Australian finishing at nine under, the American at eight under.
Brian Davis of England led the three Europeans in the field home, his 69 giving him a four-under finish in a tie for 42nd, with Mathias Gronberg of Sweden shooting a 72 to close at two under.
Sweden's Jesper Parnevik closed with a one-under 69 that left him one under for the tournament.
