Brian Gay carded a final round one-under par 69 to narrowly hold on to his overnight lead and capture his first PGA title at the Mayakoba Classic on Sunday.
With the world's top players competing in this weekend's WGC Accenture Match Play Championship, Gay capitalised posting an overall score of 16-under 264 to win for the first time in 292 career PGA events.
After firing a sizzling third-round 62 to open a five-shot lead, Gay staved off a furious finish by Steve Marino who finished two shots further back.
Gay bogeyed the par-4 17th and saw his lead shrink to two shots when Marino birdied the par-4 18th.
However Gay held his nerve to par the final hole and complete his maiden title.
A 10-year veteran, Gay enjoyed a 54-hole lead only one other time in his career.
That was at the Colonial in 2004, when he dropped from a three-way tie for the lead to a tie for 14th after shooting five-over for his final round.
But Gay was solid despite being unspectacular on Sunday, registering four birdies to offset a trio of bogeys.
John Merrick and Matt Kuchar both carded three-under 67s to finish tied for third at 12-under. Cliff Kresge fired a 66 to finish alone in fifth at 11-under.
