Fred Funk showed that you shouldn't write off the old guys when he won the Mayakoba Golf Classic on the second hole of a play-off on Sunday.

"I think I validated how good the players are on the Champions Tour," Funk said after becoming only the second man to triumph in a PGA Tour event after victory on the Champions Tour.

Funk was always in command of the event at the El Camaleon course, the PGA Tour's first in Mexico, after posting a course record eight-under 62 in the opening round on Thursday.

He never relinquished it, but found himself tied at the top of the leaderboard on several occasions during the four days, including from the 14th hole - until he sank the birdie putt that won him the play-off against Jose Coceres at the second extra hole.

This after closing with a one-over 71 that allowed Argentinian Coceres, with a 69, to catch him on the closing stretch with a 14-under 266 total.

Australian Peter Lonard was a shot back on 13 under, American Ryan Armour shot a final round 66 to finish on -12, while fellow American Bill Haas ended on -11.
