Justin Rose claimed a share of second place - his first top-two finish on the PGA Tour - after a closing 68 at the Valero Texas Open.
The 26-year-old finished alongside Americans Dean Wilson and Anthony Kim on 12-under-par 268. Kim, 21, was remarkably playing his first event on the main US tour.
While Wilson shot 69, Kim a dazzling 65 and Rose 68 on the final day, winner Eric Axley followed two successive rounds of 63 with a one-over-par 71.
However he still won by three shots, having started the day leading by four, and the Knoxville, Tennessee resident claimed his first PGA Tour title at the age of 32.
Axley's win was made remarkable by the fact he had never previously had a top-20 finish on the PGA Tour.
This is his rookie season, and in 24 events in 2006 before this weekend he made only 11 cuts.
Rose had two previous third-place finishes in the United States to his name - both last year at the Buick Championship and Funai Classic - however he missed out on selection for the Ryder Cup.
Bernard Langer, captain of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team two years ago at Oakland Hills, perhaps had his mind on events at the K Club as his tournament ended with a round of 74.
The 49-year-old German was threatening to cause a major shock after the second round, when he moved to within two shots of the lead.
However a third round of 69 did him few favours, and his closing round was easily his worst of the week, dropping him into a share of 21st place.
American Shaun Micheel, runner-up to Paul Casey at the World Match Play Championship seven days previously, finished on level par on four under, while England's Brian Davis closed with 69 for a three-over total of 283.
