Heath Slocum fired a six-under-par 66 to complete a strong weekend and claim a
two-shot victory in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic, the final official event
on the PGA Tour.
While many golfers in the field were playing to get into the top 125 on the
money list and earn an exemption for the 2006 season, Slocum had no such
problems, having earned a two-year ride with his win at the 2004 Chrysler
Classic of Tucson.
The 31-year-old native of Florida came into this event 67th on the money list
and left with a cheque for £309,000 and the security of a tee time through
2007.
Coming off a 64 on Saturday, Slocum began the day tied with Loren Roberts, one
shot behind third-round leader Joey Snyder III. His bogey-free round included
five birdies on the front nine as he charged to the lead and held it coming in.
Slocum finished at 21-under 267, two strokes better than Roberts (68) and Carl
Pettersson (67), both of whom collected £151,000 and got what they came for.
Roberts was 126th on the money list but gained an exemption for next season,
which he likely will split between the PGA and Champions Tours. This week, he
came up just short of joining Craig Stadler as the only players to win on both
circuits in the same year.
Pettersson arrived here 43rd on the money list and climbed into the top 40,
earning an invitation to the Masters in 2006.
Despite squandering an opportunity for his first career win, Snyder eclipsed
seven figures for the season and is secure for next year. He shot a 70 to finish
at 18-under 270, three shots back.
