Mark Calcavecchia, looking for his first win in four years, shot a
one-over-par 71 in the final round and held on for a one-shot victory at the
Bell Canadian Open.
He finished at five-under 275, one shot better than Ben Crane and Ryan Moore.
He picked up his first victory since the Phoenix Open in 2001.
After consecutive rounds in the 60s to start the tournament, Calcavecchia
found the going tough over the weekend at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.
He shot a birdie-free two-over 72 in the third round as a comfortable
five-stroke lead was whittled to one.
In the final round, he managed just one birdie with two bogeys but still
managed to take home the first prize.
Crane entered the final round at even par and made a run with six birdies to
offset a pair of bogeys. A birdie at the par-three 17th put some pressure on
Calcavecchia, but Crane closed with a par and had to sit and watch as
Calcavecchia closed his round with five consecutive pars.
Moore, the 2004 US amateur champion, signed for a 70, capping the
21-year-old's best finish as a professional since tying for 13th at The
Masters.
Defending champion Vijay Singh was lurking at three under to start the round
but was unable to get anything going. He shot a 72 and finished tied for seventh
at one-under 279.
