England's Justin Rose had to settle for third place as Brad Faxon sank a short
birdie putt on the first play-off to defeat Tjaart van der Walt and win the
Buick Championship.
Rose, leading by one going into the final round, shot a one-under-par 69 to
finish on 13-under 267 but was overhauled by Faxon and van der Walt.
The 25-year-old birdied the seventh but then had three bogeys in five holes.
He battled back with three birdies in the next four holes but missed the
play-off by one shot.
Faxon, entering the final round seven shots behind Rose, made his charge by
carding the lowest round of his career, a nine-under-par 61 at the TPC at River
Highlands. He shot a 62 in the second round at Provident Classic back in 1986.
However, Faxon's huge round was not enough to win in regulation since van der
Walt birdied the 17th and 18th en route to a 64 to force a play-off after a tie
on 14-under 266 .
Back at the par-four 18th, Faxon hit his second shot from a fairway bunker
within three feet of the cup. Van der Walt answered by driving his second shot
off the flag to within about eight feet.
Van der Walt sent his birdie putt to the right of the hole and Faxon calmly
stepped up and sank his, giving the Rhode Island resident his first victory in
125 events dating to the 2001 Sony Open.
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke had a double-bogey at the short eighth as a
71 slid him into a share of 31st place on four under
Lee Westwood also shot 71 and finished one under, one ahead of fellow
Englishman Brian Davis, who carded a final round 69.
On his slender lead going into the final round, Rose said: "One shot is
nothing really. That was my approach. I knew I had to go out there and play a
good round, make it mine.
"That's what I needed to do because guys are shooting 61 and 64 from behind
you, so I needed to keep moving forward. I was aware of that at the time."
Rose had a chance to forge a three-way play-off at the 18th but was unable to
convert a birdie putt from about 20 feet.
"I am disappointed, but at the 18th hole I gave the putt a chance. It just
sort of missed on the high side.
"It was one of the few putts I got to the hole all day. I would never forgive
myself if I left it short."
