Kenny Perry tied his own course record and cruised to an seven-shot victory at
the Colonial for his second victory of the season.
The record-setting winner here two years ago, Perry shot a one-under-par 69 to
finish with a 19-under 261 total, eight shots better than Billy Mayfair.
Mayfair fired a 66 to finish at 12 under. Joe Durant and David Toms each
signed for rounds of 66 and Peter Lonard carded a 69 to finish tied for third at
11 under.
Perry's record total of 261 is three shots better than anyone that has ever
played the Colonial Country Club course. His two wins here have come by a total
of 13 shots. Golf legend Ben Hogan won this event five times, by a total of 11
shots.
Perry joins Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as multiple winners on
tour this season. Perry won at Bay Hill in March and will be looking to repeat
the run he went on the last time he won the Colonial.
After his win here in 2003, Perry went on a tear in his next three events. He
won the Memorial, tied for third at the US Open and then won the Greater
Milwaukee Open. The 44-year-old has nine career wins, six coming since he turned
40.
