Phil Mickelson, who entered the last round with a four-shot lead, finished with a three-under-par 68 for a 17-under total of 267 and a five-shot victory at the FBR Open in Arizona.

Scott McCarron and Kevin Na tied for second place on 12 under at 272.

Mickelson was not at his best but showed the scrambling ability that has made him one of the PGA Tour's most consistent players.

He missed five consecutive fairways starting on the 10th but still managed a birdie on the 13th.

He finally wrapped up the victory with a birdie putt from off the fringe on the 18th to earn £500,000.

McCarron carded a six-under 65 and Na shot a 69 on the 7,216-yard TPC of Scottsdale course but it was not enough to stop Mickelson from winning his 24th PGA Tour title.

David Toms, Tim Herron and Steve Flesch finished tied for fourth on 11 under.

Tournament record-holder Mark Calcavecchia, who finished at 28 under on 256 in 2001, shot a 71 and finished tied for ninth at eight under.
