Retief Goosen overturned a four-shot deficit before the final round to surge past Tiger Woods and claim the Tour Championship.

Thanks to a stunning round of 64, the South African actually won the Atlanta event by four strokes after Woods, the joint leader after three rounds, could only manage a 72.

US Open champion Goosen fired a bogey-free six-under-par 64 in ideal conditions. He did not miss a green in regulation until the final hole, finishing at 11-under for the tournament.

Woods, who had won 30 of 32 times that he had led entering the final round on the PGA Tour, showed that the swing problems that have plagued him all year have not been eliminated.

He was wild off the tee and in the end did well to hang on and finish second after a two-over 72.

Jerry Kelly (65) was another shot back in third place, while Jaay Haas, who started level with Woods at the start of Sunday's play, faded with a 75 to tie for seventh, a distant seven strokes behind Goosen.

World number one Vijay Singh, a nine-time winner this year, finished ninth.
