Vijay Singh's magical year got even better on Sunday as he became the first
golfer in history to pass the US$10 million mark for one season.
Singh picked up his ninth win of the season on Sunday - the most on the PGA
Tour in 54 years - as he cruised to a five-stroke victory at the $5 million
Chrysler Championship.
The Fijian began the day with a one-shot lead over Tommy Armour III and shot a
6-under-par 65 on the Copperhead Course at the Westin Innisbrook Resort for a
four-round total of 18-under 266.
Singh's nine wins match the total won by Tiger Woods in 2000 and are the most
by any player since Sam Snead won 11 events in 1950, when the PGA Tour was far
less competitive.
Already having set a single-season record for prize money, Singh became golf's
first $10 million man as the $900,000 first prize pushed his 2004 earnings to $10,725,166.
He has done most of his damage in one of the best three-month spans in the
history of the sport.
Since August 1, Singh has won $5.72 million in eight events, winning six -
including the PGA Championship - and settling for second in another.
The wins and money just during that span would be enough to lead the tour in
both categories.
On Saturday, Armour and Jesper Parnevik stopped just short of admitting they
were playing for second place.
That's where they ended up at 13-under 271 as Parnevik shot 68 and Armour 69.
"Once the season is over I'll sit back and just enjoy the time I've had this
year," said Singh. "I'm enjoying what I'm doing.
"It's always good when you hit the ball and it goes where you want it to go.
The second half of the season has been incredible," he told Sky Sports.
